What's the difference between a credit or debit card fraud and dispute claim?

The claim may be considered fraud when there’s a posted transaction that you believe is unauthorized. This means you don’t believe it was initiated by you (the account holder) or someone you authorized, it was done without your permission, and from which you received no benefit.

The claim may be considered a dispute, when there’s a transaction that was authorized, but it posted to your account incorrectly; was for merchandise or service you didn’t receive as expected or there was another problem with the transaction.
Examples include cases such as:

  • The transaction posted twice or for the wrong amount.
  • Merchandise or service was cancelled or returned, and you didn’t receive a credit.
  • Merchandise or service was not received or not as described.
