Watch for an email.

You’ll receive an email about next steps you still need to take. When everything is complete, we’ll send a final payoff letter.

Confirm your address.

Because we’ll be sending important final documents through the mail, make sure your most recent address is on file with us.

Cancel autopay.

You’ll need to cancel any automatic payments set up with another financial institution.

Reflect your current balance.

In most cases, your online balance will reflect your final payment one business day after we receive payoff funds. It may take up to 30 days to close the account.

Get the lien released.

We’ll handle getting the lien released from the state in which it was recorded. You can find more about the process in this article.

Being enrolled in autopay with U.S. Bank means you’ve given permission for us to transfer funds for your loan payment on a recurring basis, either from a U.S. Bank account or an account with another financial institution. 

To see if you’re enrolled in U.S. Bank autopay, use online banking or the U.S. Bank Mobile App to  navigate to Transfer & pay and choose Pay bills. Under the details of your auto loan, you’ll see “Autopay on” if you’ve selected the service.



If you’re enrolled in autopay through U.S. Bank, we’ll cancel that service on your behalf after your auto loan is paid in full. If you’re enrolled in autopay with a different financial institution, you’ll need to contact them directly to cancel those payments.

A title is a legal document establishing proof of ownership. For an auto loan, U.S. Bank’s lien – the legal right of a lender to sell your property if you don’t meet your contractual obligations – is placed on the title, as we lent the funds for purchase.

Depending on the state you live in, you may be holding title with our lien, U.S. Bank may be holding the title or your title may be held electronically with the state until the lien is released.

Make sure you keep your title in a safe place because you’ll need it in the future if you want to sell or trade your vehicle.

It will depend on whether the title is in electronic or paper form. Please allow seven to 10 business days for the lien release, after the vehicle loan is paid in full. In the event we didn’t receive a paper title, a notarized lien release notice is mailed to you. Take this notice to the local licensing agency and request a lien-free title.

We recommend that you visit a local licensing agency in your new state to determine what is needed for registration in the new state. We can help with updating your address on file if you call  U.S. Bank on 800-872-2657 Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT.

Billing statements are available about 20 days before your payment due date. You’ll receive them in the mail or online, depending on how you set up your preferences. We recommend you check your statements thoroughly. Some points of interest include: your account summary, important messages, and the current minimum amount due.

Credit bureaus are agencies that gather and report information on consumers' credit histories. To inform lending decisions, creditors and lenders submit inquiries to credit bureaus to review that information, verify credit histories and find your credit score.
